Searching...
I was having a conversation with someone not long ago and he was telling me about his path. This man had been on a particular spiritual path for about 20 years and he was telling me of his progress. We took a walk and I asked him, "Is it possible that you are just imagining that you are on a path?". We stopped in the middle of the road and looked at each other because we felt that something significant has been said. (I had not "planned" on saying this). We sat down on a couple of stumps and what we saw may be of some interest to you, particularly, if you have or were on a "path."
Being on a religious/spiritual path implies that one is going somewhere just as when we walk on a normal path the path exists to take the walker to some destination. People study and practice spiritual paths in order to get somewhere but if one is already at the place one thinks one must get to, then being on a path would be a hindrance as opposed to a help.
The man I was talking with obviously thought he wasn't at the place he wanted to get to so I asked him what he was searching for. After separating the wheat from the chaff, we discovered that he was after what everyone ultimately is after, Peace. But he didn't realize this until we had talked for awhile. We had to go through, money, family, comfort, wanting, desires, etc., until we arrived at Peace. Which is significant because most people on paths do not know what they are on the path for.
They usually have some vague notion but it is usually what the path says not what they know. As the old saying goes, "If you don't know where you're going, any path will take you there." This is the reason we see so much "path-switching," Christian today, Buddhist tomorrrow. :)
In a couple of days, he Realized that Peace was Here. And he saw that searching for Peace was in one sense silly. As he said, "How could I realize peace, if I was searching for it?" We had a good laugh. :)
So...in that sense, he was just imagining he was on a path because although it was a real search for him what he was searching for wasn't "lost." He was playing a game without knowing it. All religious/spiritual searches are illusion.
It is this "game-playing" that is Seen by a Teacher/guru and it is this sorrowful search that evokes deep compassion in the Teacher. It is only when the searcher begins to question the search, that the Teacher appears. The Teacher cannot appear to a impenetrable mind as it is too well fortified and will not allow any light to penetrate. And the Teacher is not looking for work. :))
By the way, the most impenetrable mind is one that is "devoted." :)
