Dialogues At The End Of The Search
"Let It All Come" (Chapter 16)
Wayne: Yes, this is the final learning. To say “let it all come,” means All, including, “fuck pain.” Nothing we say about anything has anything to do with anything, except what we say it does. One can live a life that includes fear or not. Awareness continues to expand if we allow it to. It is only our constant need to put a meaning onto things – our unwillingness to let things be - that stops expansion. Awareness Is.
Conclusions are graves. If we say “this is the way it is” and we back up this belief with action, we solidify the conclusion. Then when another possibility comes along we do not hear it, because we have already decided “this is the way it is!” It is the mind that we listen to, and the mind is totally conditioned with conclusions. The mind is the product of human experience, and as that experience has distilled down through the centuries, the mind has drawn more and more conclusions based upon experience. When a baby is born it is not allowed to be; it is conditioned from the start, just as its parents were, and their parents, and so on down through the centuries.
The only fears we have are those things that go against the conditioned experience of humanity. Everything that challenges humanity’s beliefs has a fearful element embedded in it. In fact, we do not experience anything as new; we only experience variations on belief. And of course the biggest fear humanity has collectively is of death. Humanity cannot face the fact that the individual, you and I, are going to die, and that will be it for us.
This belief is so huge and overpowering that we get caught in a conflict of beliefs. On the one hand, we attempt to do everything within our power to prolong life, to avoid death, and on the other, we attempt to construct religions that promise that we will survive in heaven if we fail to discover everlasting life. All of humanity’s efforts are to avoid death. And pain is the loudest horn blaring its inevitable arrival. The root cause of the attempt to remove pain, is that we fear the message that it is bringing: the message that we are mortal.
When we see others in pain, such as here in EOTS, we would like to be able to do something to ease or end their pain. We would like to do this for a number of reasons but one of them is a reason we seldom look
at, namely, that if we can somehow or other ease their pain then we might have hope of avoiding it ourselves. We will not let it be. We attempt to fight it by accepting it or ignoring it - both mental strategies.
The individual view of the world is totally self-centered. This is not to put a label such as “bad” or “selfish,” it is the condition of life; survival. We help others so that others will help us. Until such time as we can honestly look at the world and its inhabitants, beginning with self-examination, there will only be a story of how we “should” be based upon a fairy tale that avoids death and allows the personality to continue.
To give up your life so that another may live is Love. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son...” has the kernel of Love within it. One need not “look for” a reason to die for another that only leads to egotism and storytelling, but when one Knows, quietly, that one would do this, one Sees. Death has lost its power. To “go gently into that good night” indicates one, who Knows Peace.
Fear will eventually be faced by one and all - on the day the body sighs its last breath or before. We have a choice: to continue believing in the story we have been born into, and join the herd in attempting to find more and more solutions where there is no problem, or to begin to question the story and all of its conclusions - to question in Stillness. To begin to Know that the body/mind/personality is finite, is a beginning. To look upon those who are in pain or are dying, without fear for them or yourself, is a beginning.
In the end, it will turn out the same regardless of the choice one makes. You can choose fear and avoidance. But should you begin to question the story you have been fed by our ancestors, and the religions and spiritual paths they created as a panacea, you will begin to Know who you really are, and with that comes the Peace that you need not wait for. All can know this Peace regardless of the condition of the body/mind. You can believe this or not. Choose, as you will...
